I'm one that likes to hear the good in man prevailling when one saves another no matter if it is your job or if you did it out of the goodness of your heart. I also like to hear that one remembers the sacrifices that others make to save a life.

For me, I got a call for a man who was at his soon to be ex-wifes house, which she had a restraining/order for protection against him. He was angry about the divorce and that he saw her having sex with her now current boyfriend while peeping in the windows. Long story short, she calls 911, I get there, find him in the driveway. I order him to the ground, he ignores me (go figure). By this point I was able to get him away from the door. He tells me he wants me to meet someone, and reaches into his left pocket. I duck down behind his car, taking cover thinking he has a gun. He had actually pulled out his keys, and tried to leave. So I ran over and tased him. However, the taser wires got cut in the door and did not complete the circuit. He was able to get away. After a small chase, I arrest him only to find rope and a very large knife in the car. Talk about an exciting night.

Well, I'm in awe of you all that have already told your tales. Here's my offering, not the most memorable, but the one that most easily comes to mind.
I was working in the cellblock, AdSeg. My partner spotted an inmate cutting on himself with a weapon he fashioned from a smuggled razor blade. He was cut in the brachials, and had done slashes from his wrist to his elbows. Blood was spurting everywhere.
He sounded off the alarm, and I came running from 4 floors away. I met up with the officer that discovered the problem, a unit sergeant, and a "desk officer". We grabbed some safety gear (plexiglass shield) and leg restraints (we already had handcuffs).
The inmate staggered into the corner of his cell and fell down, and did not respond to our shouting to come to the door to put his hands through a cuff-slot (Adseg means high security). The sergeant made a decision to go and get him with the team we had, since no one else showed up. My partner unlocked the door, and the desk officer and I charged in, handcuffed the inmate, and put him on the stretcher. The inmate's bleeding was slowed so much that we were afraid that he was going downhill as it was. The sergeant and I used two towels as tourniquets on his arms to slow down the further loss of blood.
The 4 of us then put him on a gurney and ran like hell for about the distance of two city blocks to the medical center. The nurses already knew about the problem, but not all of them were prepared to help. One nurse froze in place.
The ambulance guys who drove to the prison told us later that the tourniquet idea probably saved the inmate's life.
It was not the 1st suicide attempt that I have responded too, but it was one of the bloodiest. The blood was sprayed on the walls, and the other officer and sergeant and I were smeared with it. The memory came back today because I found a inmate attempting to hang himself and the team and I intervened and saved his life.

How's this. Working on my birthday, we get a call for a building fire with a person trapped. Being assigned to the Truck Company (rescue of trapped victims and ventilation) our job was to head for the floor. We were met by heavy smoke, then unbearable heat right around the corner from the fire apartment. Having no time to wait on the Engine company, my partner and I pushed into the apartment. It was a kitchen/living room burning, quickly getting out of control. We pushed by the fire, as we could hear moaning from the far corners. We pushed towards the bedroom and found the man lying in the hallway to his bedroom. We removed him to safety, and he survived with no health issues that were long lasting. The first of my 8 rescues of trapped fire victims, but the most memorable because it was on my birthday.

Labrador, pretty hairy! I have never been in a full-scale fire like that, though we have some good ones, the physical plant keeps them isolated. In a burning apartment, that takes nerve. Good save!

This one actually happened not long after I started working as a paramedic. Got a call at about 2 a.m. for a single vehicle MVC. Arrived on scene, (raining like hell of course) to find 2 females in their mid 20's laying in a ditch about 30 yards from their vehicle. Both had been ejected and were in pretty bad shape. To make matters worse there was 4 obviously drunk guys there as well who started to get pretty belligerent. It was in a pretty rural area and it police didn't arrive on scene until a few minutes after us. To top it off none of the helicopter services in our area would launch due to the weather. After getting these girls packaged we haul ass to the nearest trauma center, about 35-40 minutes away. No other trucks were available to take one of the patients for us, so we meet our supervisor en route to jump in the back with me. Supervisor mainly helped me suction these girls and reassess them since everything else had already been done. Probably the fastest I've ever worked, and I really don't remember most of it other than my supervisor asking what needed to be done and then me looking around realizing most everything had been taken care of, lol. Anyway, to bring an end to an already long and mostly incoherent story, saw one of the girls mothers just a few months ago and she told me they had 32 surgeries between the 2 of them and both were doing well now. The best part was when the mother thanked me. Calls like that remind me why I do this. It sure ain't the money!

I can't find my puppy, can you help me find him? I think he went into this cheap motel room.

Humble add on after the last post by fdjt: Bumped into a guy who had been stabbed multiple times about 4 years ago. He thanked me and a Lt. who had intervened and basically fought for his life, both combatively and with 1st aid. The docs on duty didn't take his wounds seriously enough (We could hear that his lungs were punctured), so we waited until the ones that were on duty left and brought the inmate/patient back to the ward, and found someone who took us seriously. The dude stayed in the ICU because of the infections that had developed while the doc didn't take his wounds seriously.

It never ceases to amaze me what you guys and gals go through on a daily basis at work or what kind of trouble human beings manage to get into every single day.
